Sirius adds some XM channels to radio service
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oprah Winfrey, professional hockey and basketball games and other programing previously exclusive to XM Satellite Radio can now be heard on Sirius's service, some two months after their controversial merger was completed. Similarly, Sirius says Howard Stern's channels are available on XM's system, as Sirius XM Radio rolls out its "Best of..." feature.

Bringing together exclusive content was one of the chief benefits Sirius and XM proposed as their merger sought shareholder and regulatory approval.

XM / Sirius merger approved!

Looks like that seemingly-desperate two month extension XM and Sirius gave each on the merger agreement paid off after all -- federal regulators have finally approved the $5B deal. The Department of Justice's Antitrust Division says that after "thorough and careful review" (we'll say -- it's been over a year), it's determined that allowing the two satellite radio companies to merge "is not likely to harm consumers." The deciding factor appeared to be the proprietary hardware needed to receive both XM and Sirius; since consumers who shell out aren't likely to switch, the DOJ doesn't think the marketplace is all that competitive to begin with, which makes the impact of a merger relatively small. In fact, the DOJ says the merger could actually benefit consumers, who might see lower prices as the result of more efficient operations, broader programming options, and faster rollouts of new technology.

Sirius XM Radio, the company formed when Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Radio merged in July, this week provided details of the company's new "Best of Both" programming options.

"Best of Both" programming will be available to satellite radio consumers beginning October 6, 2008 on most existing satellite radios at a monthly cost of $16.99.
